When do I need to give a rent receipt to my tenant?

Any time rent is paid. For HRA exemption claims, the employee (your tenant) needs receipts for the months they're claiming — typically monthly. If annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000, the receipt must carry the landlord's PAN.

Does the landlord PAN need to be on the receipt?

Yes — if the tenant's annual rent paid to you exceeds ₹1,00,000 (i.e. more than ₹8,333/month), your PAN must appear on the rent receipt. The tenant's employer will reject the HRA declaration without it.

Is a revenue stamp required?

Under the Indian Stamp Act, a revenue stamp (Re. 1) is required on receipts for cash payments exceeding ₹5,000. For UPI or bank transfers, no stamp is needed. This receipt notes that requirement.

What is HRA exemption and how is it calculated?

HRA (House Rent Allowance) exemption under Section 10(13A) is the least of: (1) actual HRA received from employer; (2) 50% of basic salary for metro cities (Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai) or 40% for others; (3) actual rent paid minus 10% of basic salary. Your tenant needs rent receipts to claim this at tax time.

Is this receipt legally valid?
